X introduces Chat messaging upgrade with encrypted chats and file sharing

New Delhi: X has announced Chat, an updated extension of its one-on-one messaging service that introduces end-to-end encryption, vanishing messaging, and added additional calling features to the platform. The new system is used to substitute the current DM service being used by X on iOS and the web, and the Android version is likely to be available in the near future. The company claims that the old messages of users will be transferred automatically, which will guarantee a soft transfer.

Chat features a secure messaging service, both text and files, but X admits that metadata, including timestamps and recipient information, is not encrypted. The company cautions as well that at present, users are not able to identify man-in-the-middle attacks when a malicious insider (or X itself) hacks into a conversation. X claims that message authentication tools and device identity are under development.

Stronger privacy tools

Chat has disappearing messages, which automatically vanish after some time. Users are also able to block screenshots completely, or they can get a warning whenever a screenshot is captured. On demand, one can edit or delete messages.

The platform can also make voice and video calls, which adds to the capabilities of Chat, making it more than just a simple exchange of text messages. X will also introduce voice notes in the near future, which are based on encrypted DMs that were initially launched in 2023 and later stopped this year to be updated.
