What are the reasons for stone formation?
Dr. Rajesh Aggarwal, Director of Nephrology and Shri Balaji Action Medical Institute, says that there are many reasons for the formation of kidney stones. The most common reason is lack of water, due to which urine becomes thick and deposits minerals and stones are formed. Apart from this, excessive consumption of foods rich in salt, protein and oxalate also increases the risk of stones. At the same time, chronic diseases like urine infection or calcium imbalance, history of stones in the family and sedentary lifestyle can also cause stones. However, if you adopt proper diet, adequate water and healthy lifestyle, the risk of kidney stones can also be reduced.

Can stones be removed without medicine?
Dr. Rajesh Aggarwal says that, yes, small kidney stones (up to about 4-5 mm) can often pass out through urine on their own without medication, especially if enough water is drunk. Drinking 2 to 3 liters of water daily helps in flushing out the stones. However, if the stone is large, the pain is severe or blood is seen in the urine, then the doctor should be contacted immediately. Larger stones may sometimes require medication or procedures.
Can stones be removed with home remedies also?
Experts say that drinking too much water without medicine can remove small stones. There are some such home remedies, which help in removing the stones through urine. Apart from this, drinking lemon water is also considered beneficial, because the citrate present in it can help in reducing the process of stone formation. Some people also consume coconut water, barley water or basil leaves, which are traditionally considered good for kidney health. However, it is very important to consult your doctor before consuming them.
