Worker dies in soil cave-in during pipeline repair in Aligarh; video surfaces

New Delhi: A 32-year-old worker died after being buried under debris during pipeline repair work in the Bannadevi area of Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh on Saturday.

The incident occurred on Railway Road, where repair work was underway following a pipeline leak. A pit around 14 feet deep had been dug to fix the damaged section. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

Two others escape narrowly

According to reports, the worker, identified as Mahendra, had been sent down into the pit around 2 pm when the soil caved in. While two other workers narrowly escaped, Mahendra was trapped under the debris.

Co-workers used a JCB machine to pull him out and rushed him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Family members have alleged negligence, claiming that concerns about soil instability were raised before the incident. They also alleged that a junior engineer ignored warnings and forced the worker to continue.

Committee formed to investigate matter

Civic officials have ordered an inquiry into the incident. Aligarh Municipal Commissioner Prem Prakash Meena said a committee has been formed to investigate the matter, with a report expected within three days.

Authorities have announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim’s family.
