In an unexpected turn of events, a woman based in Northern China underwent a DNA test after her colleagues joked about her unusual looks and found out that she was not genetically related to her parents.
In an interview with the South China Morning Post, the woman who hails from Xinxiang, Henan province revealed that the test was prompted by her coworkers’ light-hearted remarks about her different appearance, stating that it “did not look local.” Driven by their comments, she began to question where she originated from and sought clarification from her family.
“I’ve always lived in Xinxiang, but when I started working, my coworkers said, ‘You don’t look like us at all. You have a wider nose, thicker lips, and larger and deeper eyes than we have. You don’t look like someone from Henan at all’,” the woman, surnamed Dong, told SCMP. “Every night I wondered where I came from?” she added.
However, her family gave unclear and contradictory answers to her questions, therefore, she sought confirmation through a DNA test. The results confirmed her doubts, revealing that she was not her parents’ biological daughter. Moreover, the test indicated that she likely originated from Guangxi province, located in the far southern part of China.
Since its initial coverage by Henan Broadcasting System on October 24, the story generated a lot of interest and conversations on social media. After Dong revealed the results of her tests, China’s internet community flooded with support with many users urging her to find her biological parents.
After the incident came under the spotlight, a woman from Guangxi, surnamed Qi, reportedly contacted Dong, suspecting that she was her long-lost daughter due to their facial similarities. However, there has been no confirmation of whether Qi is her biological mother.
Previously, a similar case came into the limelight after a family based in the US took a DNA test just for fun and found out that their youngest son was not genetically related to them. Donna Johnson, 47, and her husband Vanner, 47, along with their two boys, Vanner Jr, 18, and Tim, 12, took the tests “for fun” in 2019, unaware of the life-changing truth that awaited them. The results revealed that Tim, their youngest kid, was not biologically linked to Vanner. Donna revealed that she had sought the help of in vitro fertilisation in 2008 to conceive.
