Winter wreaked havoc on eggs, prices increased by 50%, what is the reason?

Rising prices of eggs.

Egg prices have increased rapidly in many big cities of India, now generally one has to pay Rs 8 to Rs 10 for an egg. This everyday thing which was once cheap has now become expensive. Many people are calling it eggflation. This increase in prices has happened due to increase in demand for protein-rich diet in winter and problems in supply. In an article of India Today dated December 25, it was reported that compared to August and September, prices in the markets have increased by 25 to 50 percent.

Egg prices in New Delhi have reached Rs 10 per piece, while in Hyderabad and Mumbai it is around Rs 8 per piece. Prices are slightly lower in Chennai. Home delivery has also become expensive on online grocery platforms, as prices are rising due to increasing demand and limited supply.

Supply and wholesale rates

According to data from the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), farm-to-consumer prices have been continuously increasing since August. In tier-1 cities, the price of 100 eggs has increased from Rs 550 to Rs 700. In states like Namakkal in Tamil Nadu and Hospet in Karnataka, the wholesale rate is still around Rs 640-645 per 100 eggs.

effect of increased demand

About 5.5 to 6 crore eggs are consumed daily in Uttar Pradesh. To meet such a huge demand, about 4 crore eggs are brought from other states. The demand is so high that it is continuously putting pressure on prices.

Supply side challenges

The prices of eggs are not increasing only because of demand. Transport costs, production problems and the spread of diseases among birds are also driving prices higher. Supply in Maharashtra was affected due to the spread of disease in poultry farms in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. At the same time, demand also increases due to increase in consumption during cold season.

increase in production costs

The prices of poultry feed like corn and soybean are increasing every year. Due to this, small farming operations have closed down, resulting in reduced production. But the prices of eggs in India are still much lower than the global level. The price of an egg in America, Britain and Germany is between Rs 30-40. Among Asian countries, only Pakistan and Bangladesh have prices equal to India.

effect of changing weather

Maize crop was damaged due to rain in South India, due to which the price of poultry feed increased. At the same time, due to fungal infection, the supply of eggs decreased by about 7-10%, which is why the prices of eggs across the country have now become a challenge for the common consumers.
