Wimbledon 2025: Anisimova reaches semifinals with straight sets win over Pavlyuchenkova

New Delhi: Amanda Anisimova dug deep in a tense second set to secure her place in the Wimbledon semifinals, wrapping up the quarterfinal battle in style. The American overpowered the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 7-5 to advance to her maiden SW19 semis.

Anisimova wasted no time and took control from the first point, winning the opening set in just 27 minutes while dropping only one game. In the second set, Anisimova broke the German’s serve in the sixth game to lead 4-2. But when she was serving for the match at 5-3, the American was broken for the first time when Pavlyuchenkova converted her third break point. Pavlyuchenkova kept pushing her back and forced a tighter contest, taking the set deep as the American had to save five set points before finally converting on her fourth match point to close out the win.

After the match, Anisimova created a heartwarming moment on Centre Court by bringing her young nephew Jackson, who is celebrating his birthday this week, onto the court for her post-match interview. Holding his hand as they walked over to the microphone, Anisimova’s gesture had the crowd on its feet, soaking in a moment that was simply too adorable for words.

In the post-match presentation, Anisimova said, It’s super special”. Having taken a break from the game and been through so much since her first Wimbledon quarter-final in 2022, the 23-year-old says it’s been an “extraordinary year … I just keep telling myself to enjoy the moment”. Next week she will make it to the top 10 for the very first time in her career.

What’s next?

Anisimova will now face World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals. The Belarusian survived a scare from Laura Siegemund, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, to book her place in the last four.
