Will Putin go to Hungary to meet Trump or will ICC warrant become a hindrance?

Trump-Putin Meeting: The next meeting of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin has been scheduled in Hungary. But the question is, will Putin be able to reach Budapest amid the ICC arrest warrant? Know what experts say, the dangers for Putin and the meaning of this meeting…

Trump-Putin Meeting in Hungary 2025: There are now preparations for a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary. Earlier talks held in Alaska were inconclusive, so now hopes are pinned on Budapest. But what is being discussed more than this meeting is whether Putin will be able to reach Hungary or will he be arrested on the way? Because an arrest warrant is issued against him by the International Criminal Court (ICC). In such a situation, there is suspense on this meeting and the eyes of the world are on what will be Putin’s next step?

Why is there an arrest warrant on Putin?

In the year 2023, the ICC had issued an arrest warrant against Putin on charges of war crimes and illegal deportation of Ukrainian children. But, ICC does not have its own police. It can arrest an accused only with the cooperation of member countries. Therefore, if Putin’s plane comes into the airspace of Hungary, Serbia or Romania, these countries would technically have to arrest him.

Will Hungary arrest Putin?

Foreign affairs experts say that it is extremely unlikely that Hungary will arrest Putin. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is considered close to Trump and has also maintained strong relations with Russia. Recently they have begun the process of withdrawing from the ICC, making Hungary’s legal responsibility a bit blurred. Orbán also said that ‘Budapest is the only city in Europe where such a meeting can be held.’ His political advantage is also hidden behind this. This summit can prove to be a big ‘image booster’ for the government which is struggling with inflation and economic pressure at the domestic level.

How will Putin reach Budapest?

If Putin decides to visit Hungary, it would be his first visit to the European Union (EU) since the war began. But the path is not easy. The first route is 3 hours long, going from Moscow to Belarus and then to Hungary via western Ukraine. This is the shortest but most dangerous route as Ukraine’s airspace is war-torn. The second route takes 5 hours, which reaches Hungary from Belarus via Poland and Slovakia. Poland is a NATO member and a staunch opponent of Russia. In such a situation, flying from here can be extremely risky. The third route is 8 hours long, which goes from Türkiye via Greece to Montenegro and Serbia to Hungary. This is considered to be the safest and possible route. Serbia, Russia’s old friend, could offer safe passage to Putin.

Will EU approve Putin or not?

All EU member countries have imposed strict sanctions on Russia. If the EU allows this flight, it will send a message contrary to their support for Ukraine, and if it refuses, it will be considered an obstacle to peace talks. That is, Europe is currently in a situation of ‘if you do it, it will be difficult, if you don’t do it, it will be difficult’.

Why is Trump-Putin meeting important?

From this Trump-Putin meeting, the world hopes that perhaps a new direction may emerge to end the Ukraine war. Kremlin has also said that ‘many issues remain to be discussed, but dialogue is necessary.’ If this meeting is successful, it can prove to be a big diplomatic comeback for Russia.
