Will India recall families of diplomats from Bangladesh over safety threat? Here’s what report says

New Delhi: The bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh are going through a very rough patch. Now, New Delhi is reportedly going to withdraw the families of its diplomats posted there due to security concerns. However, all five diplomatic missions in Bangladesh will continue to operate at full strength, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.

Threats from radical elements

The Centre was mulling over the move for some time as concerns over the safety of diplomats and their families grew. In view of threats from extremist and radical elements, New Delhi has reportedly advised the families of the diplomats in Bangladesh to return to India. However, the high commission and the four other posts in Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Sylhet will operate at full strength. The timelines of the return of the families are yet to be known.

Centre may revoke ‘non-family’ posting

The ‘non-family’ posting that the Centre is reportedly revoking is one of the most stringent security measures that Indian diplomats get. At present, Pakistan is at a ‘no children’ posting, while spouses are allowed to join the diplomats.

Minorites under threat in Bangladesh

India has repeatedly urged the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Yunus, to protect the minorities in the country. According to the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, a human rights organisation against religious discrimination, attacks on minority communities are increasing in Bangladesh and have recorded 51 such incidents in December 2025 alone.

Recently, another Hindu man, 28-year-old Samir Kumar Das, a battery-operated auto-rickshaw driver, was beaten to death in the Daganbhuiyan area of Feni district. Police said the attackers assaulted and stabbed Das before fleeing with his auto-rickshaw. With the general elections just around the corner in Bangladesh, experts fear that such attacks will only increase across the country.
