Till date there was no sure cure for diabetes. Once this happens, it can be controlled only through medicines, diet and lifestyle. but now Dr. Manjunath of Surgery Department of AIIMS It has been claimed that by a special procedure i.e. metabolic surgery, diabetes can be controlled to a great extent and in many cases this disease can be almost eliminated. This surgery increases the sensitivity of insulin by bringing changes in the metabolic process of the body, due to which the blood sugar starts reducing naturally.

However, the big question is whether every diabetic patient can undergo this surgery? Let us understand for whom this surgery is safe and effective and how its entire process works.

Can every patient undergo surgery?

Dr. Manjunath of Surgery Department of AIIMS Let us tell you that metabolic surgery is not for every diabetic patient. This surgery is beneficial only for patients with type-2 diabetes and uncontrolled sugar, especially for those on whom the effect of medicines and insulin is decreasing. People who are overweight or have a high BMI are considered better candidates for this procedure, because obesity and diabetes are linked to each other.

Dr. Manjunath Said that patients with type-1 diabetes cannot benefit from this surgery, because the cause of their disease is different and insulin production stops. Apart from this, all the patients are examined on the basis of medical history, heart-kidney condition, age and other risks. The doctor decides whether the surgery can be safe and successful for their body or not.

What is the surgery procedure?

The process of metabolic surgery is similar to bariatric technique, in which changes are made in the structure of the stomach and intestines. Usually the stomach is shortened and the food passage is connected to another part of the intestine. Due to this, food gets digested faster and insulin sensitivity increases in the body.

In such a situation, the blood sugar level starts getting controlled naturally. This is a laparoscopic procedure, that is, it is done by making small incisions, due to which recovery is quick. Before surgery, complete health screening of the patient is done and after surgery, changes in diet and lifestyle are necessary.

What should be the sugar level?

American Diabetes Association has set many standards to identify diabetes. This includes HBA1C, fasting sugar and post-meal sugar level. Let us know.

HBA1C: Up to 5.7% normal, 5.7%6.4% prediabetes, 6.5% or more diabetes.

Fasting Glucose: Less than 100 mg/dL normal, 100-125 mg/dL prediabetes, 126 mg/dL or more diabetes.

Post-meal sugar: Less than 140 mg/dL is normal, 140–199 mg/dL indicates prediabetes, 200 mg/dL or more indicates diabetes.

These three tests show in which range your sugar level is and whether you have diabetes or not.
