According to reports, this decision was taken after a phone conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clearly said that there was no fixed time for the summit. This requires more preparation. Russia says that postponing the meeting does not mean that there is sourness in relations, but that both the countries are still making strategic preparations.
What did the White House say?
A senior White House official said that at present no meeting is scheduled between President Trump and Putin in the near future. This statement has raised questions on Trump’s claim in which he had said that the meeting could take place within two weeks.
Russian Foreign Minister called CNN report wrong
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov rejected CNN’s report which said that ‘there has been a change in Russia’s position.’ He said, ‘Russia’s position is the same as was decided during the Alaska Summit. We have not made any changes.’ Russia says that rather than when and where the next meeting will take place, it is more important that the agreements reached in Alaska be properly implemented. Peskov said, ‘We have a mutual understanding between the presidents, but how can we postpone what has not been finalized?’
Why is Trump’s stance changing?
In September, Trump had said that Ukraine does not need to give up its land, but it can regain the lost territory. But, after last week’s phone call with Putin and meeting with Zelensky, Trump again changed his stance. He appealed to both the countries and said, ‘Stay where you are.’
Ukraine expressed displeasure
According to an AFP report, a senior Ukrainian official said that during the meeting in Washington, Trump pressured Zelensky to withdraw his troops from the Donbass region. According to the officer, ‘Yes, it is true. The talks were very tense and difficult. The Ukrainian side said diplomatic efforts felt slow and roundabout.
