PM Modi on Vande Mataram: There was a 10-hour historic debate in the Lok Sabha on the completion of 150 years of Vande Mataram, which was initiated by PM Modi. He told how the British were afraid of Vande Mataram and were forced to ban it.
Vande Mataram PM Modi Speech: A 10-hour long historic debate began in the Lok Sabha today on the completion of 150 years of India’s national song Vande Mataram. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself initiated the debate. He gave information about the history of the national anthem and cornered the Congress on its removal. PM Modi first pointed towards the history which few people know. He said, ‘The British were so afraid of Vande Mataram that they were even forced to ban it.’ He told how the British had even made laws to ban the printing, singing and spreading of this song.
Vande Mataram was a sacred war cry- PM
PM Modi said that this song was not just a slogan, but a common mantra of freedom fighters of every ideology. It was Gandhiji, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Lala Lajpat Rai, everyone had the same voice in their hearts. He said that ‘Vande Mataram was not just a slogan for political freedom. This was a sacred war cry to free Mother India from the colonial chains.
Vande Mataram became the shield during the partition of Bengal – PM Modi
PM Modi reminded that Vande Mataram stood like a rock amid the ‘Divide and Rule’ policy of the British. Its echo united millions of people during the partition of Bengal in 1905. ‘Vande Mataram worked to unite people in Bengal, not to divide them.’

PM read the verses removed from Vande Mataram
In the House, the Prime Minister read out the allegedly deleted verses of Vande Mataram and said, ‘Vande Mataram was a mantra which showed the country the path of strength, energy and sacrifice.’ He reminded that when the British wanted to spread their tune ‘God Save the Queen’ in every home, at the same time in India, Vande Mataram used to awaken the souls of the people. The Prime Minister said, ‘We are sitting here today because lakhs of people sacrificed their lives by saying Vande Mataram.’
Constitution was suppressed after completion of 100 years- PM Modi
The PM said that at the time of completion of 100 years of Vande Mataram, the country was facing Emergency, a period when the voice of the Constitution was suppressed. On completion of 150 years today, he said, ‘Now the real dignity and pride of this song has to be returned. The government wants to restore Vande Mataram to its historical honour. This is not just a song, but the soul of India. Vande Mataram is our inspiration, we are indebted to it.
Congress still insults Vande Mataram – PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while making a scathing attack on Congress in the Parliament, said that the Congress party has insulted Vande Mataram not only today but also in history. He said that Congress compromised the national anthem by bowing before the Muslim League and the same thinking continues even today. The Prime Minister said, the country was divided in 1947, but before that Congress had divided Vande Mataram. He said that before independence it was a symbol of national consciousness, but under political pressure its positions were cut and it was weakened.
Congress surrendered to Muslim League- PM
The Prime Minister alleged that Congress hurt the national sentiment by compromising on Vande Mataram. He said, ‘Nehru tore Vande Mataram into pieces. Congress weakened the national anthem and bowed under pressure. Citing history, he said that Nehru himself had written in a letter to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose that Vande Mataram could incite Muslims. According to PM Modi, this was the time when the national anthem was distorted and its basic spirit was harmed.
