Why Ryan ten Doeschate is set to leave India coaching setup after England ODIs

Indian cricket team’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate is set to not seek an extension of his contract and could leave the role at the end of the ongoing ODI series against England, reports said on Tuesday (July 14).

Former Netherlands batter Ten Doeschate could leave the Indian team on July 19, the day of the third ODI between the ‘Men in Blue’ and England, a report on Cricbuzz said.

Personal reasons

However, the report added that Ten Doeschate is yet to receive the go-ahead from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Ten Doeschate has completed his two-year contract on July 14 and won’t seek an extension, reports said. He is keen to move on due to personal reasons as he wants to be with his family – wife and three young sons, who are settled in London.

“Given the extensive travel commitments associated with the India job, ten Doeschate is believed to be looking for a role that demands less travel and allows him to spend more time with his family,” the report said.

Back to T20 franchise cricket?

Another report, in Sportstar, claimed that Ten Doeschate is leaving the Indian team as he has received offers from T20 franchises. Previously, he has worked with the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) where Gambhir was also part of the franchise.

Gambhir’s high praise

It was Gambhir who pushed for the inclusion of Ten Doeschate in the Indian support staff. The former India cricketer had heaped praise on Ten Doeschate, calling him the most selfless human being he has seen and was even ready to take a bullet for him.

“When I talk about selflessness, I have never said this in 42 years of my career. And I wanted to say this. The greatest team man I ever played with, the most selfless human being, someone I can take a bullet for, someone who I can trust for life,” Gambhir was seen saying in a video that was in circulation in 2024.

“I can tell you this because in 2011, my first game as a KKR captain, we only had four overseas (players) available. And this man had a fabulous 50-over World Cup. And we went into that game with only three overseas players. He was carrying drinks in that game with no disappointment on his face. He taught me selflessness. Ryan ten Doeschate (sic),” he added.
