New Delhi: Liverpool failed to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace on deadline day despite having agreed a deal for the English defender. Guehi had made up his mind about leaving Palace and was also permitted by Palace to undergo his medical before his move to the reigning Premier League champions. However, the deal collapsed at the last minute after Palace decided against sanctioning the move.
Guehi was Liverpool’s preferred centre-back target in the 2025-26 summer transfer window, which concluded on Monday. However, the reigning champions, who broke the Premier League transfer record twice in the window and spent over 400 million pounds on new signings, left it too late for the 25-year-old.
But Liverpool were confident of getting the deal over the line on the deadline day on Monday, having reached an agreement on a fee of 35 million pounds and a 10 percent sell-on clause with Crystal Palace for the defender. However, the deal didn’t materialise in the end, and Guehi will remain at Palace when the season resumes post the international break.
Why did Liverpool’s deal for Marc Guehi collapse?
Liverpool’s deal for Guehi fell through after Palace refused to sanction the transfer as they failed to rope in a replacement for the England centre-back. Palace were targeting Brazil defender Igor Julio to replace Liverpool-bound Guehi. However, Julio ended up joining West Ham on a season-long loan deal, which prompted Palace to pull the plug on Guehi’s move to Liverpool.
Crystal Palace did manage to sign centre-back Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse, however, they wanted two defensive replacements for Guehi before approving his move to Liverpool. Their failure in landing Julio played a major role in Guehi’s move to Liverpool collapsing. Palace also signed Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche on a season-long loan deal from Getafe.
Liverpool break Premier League transfer record for Alexander Isak
Liverpool broke the Premeir League transfer record twice in the same window to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. Liverpool had signed German midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a £116 million deal to set a record for the most expensive transfer in Premier League history. However, the reigning champions broke their own record on deadline day to land Isak.
Liverpool paid a whopping £125 million to Newcastle United for Isak after chasing the Swedish striker throughout the summer transfer window. Isak, who scored 23 goals for Newcastle in the Premier League last season, is now the most expensive signing in Premier League history. Newcastle didn’t want to sell their prized asset, but were forced to sanction a move after the striker refused to join the squad and play for the club again.
