The martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur is celebrated every year on 24 November.
Guru Tegh Bahadur, the 9th Guru of Sikhism, did not inspire anyone to adopt Sikhism but taught him to follow the path of truth and righteousness. Wherever he stayed, he would build a Dharamshala and a well. Born in Amritsar, Guru Tegh Bahadur traveled from Punjab to Kashmir and from West Bengal to Bihar and Assam. Even Mughal emperor Aurangzeb was not able to digest his popularity and importance. He attacked superstition. Emphasis on education. And in India they were called Hind Di Chadar.
There are many reasons behind why it got this name. On the occasion of martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur, know why he was called Hind Di Chadar?
Why was it called Hind di Chadar?
Guru Teg Bahadur is called ‘Hind di Chadar’ i.e. the shield of India or the sheet of India. There are many reasons for this. Guru Tegh Bahadur stood alone to protect the Kashmiri Pandits. In 1675, when Aurangzeb’s atrocities were increasing. His target was Kashmir Pandits. The pressure on him to forcefully accept Islam was increasing. In such a situation, Kashmiri Pandits came to Guru Tegh Bahadur and asked him for help.
Guru Tegh Bahadur said, if my religion can be converted, then everyone can’s, if it cannot be mine, then no one’s can. After this incident the conflict between him and Aurangzeb increased. Guru Teg Bahadur did not shy away from risking his life for the entire Hindu society.
He always said that I have not come to change anyone’s religion. I stand to protect every human being, whether he is a Hindu or a Muslim. In this way he was also considered the protector of freedom of religion. When Aurangzeb pressured Guru Tegh Bahadur to accept Islam, he said, I can give my head, but not my religion. He was martyred but did not bow down before Aurangzeb. This is the reason why he was called ‘Hind Di Chadar’. He always stood as a shield to protect the people of the country. They are called ‘Hind Di Chadar’ in the entire country including Punjab.
