High court order and argument
The Allahabad High Court had clearly stated in its 28 -page order that mentioning caste in police documents and FIRs is against constitutional values. The court described it as a step to divide the society and instructed to stop immediately. It was also suggested that the name of the father or husband should be included in the police records, so that gender equality can be promoted. The High Court also directed the government that caste -based content should be strictly monitored on social media and internet platforms and simple arrangements should be given to citizens to file a complaint.
Know how this matter started?
The entire case is related to a police action of 29 April 2023. That day the police recovered a large consignment of liquor from a Scorpio car. In this, three people including accused Praveen Chhetri were arrested. The police mentioned the caste of the accused in the FIR. Against this, Praveen Chhetri filed a petition in the High Court demanding cancellation of criminal proceedings. After hearing the petition, the court ordered that there should be no mention of police records, boards of police stations and caste anywhere in public places.
What will affect politics with this order?
This decision of the UP government is certain to have a direct impact on the caste politics of the state. Now no political party or organization will be able to organize a caste -based rally. The High Court in its order also said that the eradication of caste should be an important agenda in the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047. Therefore, state and central governments will have to take concrete steps according to constitutional morality.
