Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi ended his more than decade-long wait to score his maiden ODI century. The right-handed batter finally breached the three-figure mark in the third and final ODI of the series against India in Chennai on Saturday (June 20) and scored 102 off 131 balls.
Courtesy of Shahidi’s knock, Afghanistan put on a total of 218 on the board. He was struggling in the Chennai heat but managed to bat for long. The ICC sanctioned him after the game and handed him a demerit point.
Shahidi was warned twice for running in the protected area during the game. He was warned for the first time but ran into that area again. The umpires also penalised Afghanistan and five runs were added to India’s tally before they kicked off their chase of 219.
Under the ICC rules, no one can run on the protected area of the pitch. The bowlers are also warned and then penalised if they continue to run on the protected area in their follow-up.
Afghanistan lose all matches in the series

Afghanistan’s dream to defeat India in international cricket remained unfulfilled as they failed to register a win. The series kicked off with India registering an innings and 300-run win over Afghanistan in the one-off Test match.
The ODI series kicked off with India chasing down the target of 195 in 22.5 overs. The first game was shortened to 25 overs per side due to heavy rain in Dharamsala.
Courtesy of centuries from Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan, India put on a big total of 402 on the board in the second ODI in Lucknow. The visitors were never in contention to chase the target and were bowled out for 232, losing the game by 170 runs.
India only lost one wicket and completed the chase of 219 at the loss of only one wicket in the third ODI. Jaiswal, who has been dropped from the ODI team, slammed an unbeaten century in India’s win.
