High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition in which the blood pressure exceeds the normal level. Due to this, the heart has to work harder to pump blood, which puts extra pressure on the heart and veins. Due to this people suffer from high BP problem. Doctors advise high BP patients to eat less salt, but they leave it completely, due to which the sodium level in the body decreases.
Many times the body itself reduces sodium levels in an attempt to maintain balance, which can cause problems like weakness, fatigue and muscle cramps. Due to low sodium, there is also a risk of brain related problems.
Is it right to give up salt completely in high BP?
Dr. Ajay Kumar in Delhi MCD It is said that it is not right to give up salt completely. The body needs a small amount of sodium to maintain proper water balance, nerve function and muscle activity. If salt is completely avoided, sodium deficiency (hyponatremia) may occur, which can lead to dizziness, fatigue, confusion and very low blood pressure.
The better way is to consume salt in limited quantities. Also, avoid processed foods, salty foods like pickles, papad or packed snacks. Make changes in the diet with the advice of a doctor or dietician so that the body gets the necessary sodium and blood pressure is also controlled.

Instead of salt, enhance the taste with lemon, herbs or spices.
Avoid processed and canned foods.
Include potassium rich fruits and vegetables in your diet.
Drink enough water throughout the day so that balance is maintained in the body.
Follow the medicines and diet chart prescribed by the doctor.
