Legendary story related to pindadan in Gaya ji
It is said that once a demon named Gaiasura was doing severe penance. Pleased with his penance, Lord Vishnu gave him a boon that his body would be so pure that whatever he would touch, he will go to heaven. Gaiasura’s body became so pure that the deity and sages started getting worried. Then Brahma ji came to him and asked for his body as a land to perform a yajna. During the yajna, his body began to tremble, then Lord Vishnu stabilized him with his mace and feet.
On completion of the yajna, Lord Vishnu blessed Gaiasura that wherever his body would spread, that place would be considered holy. By doing pindadan here, the ancestors will attain salvation and the Shraddha performed here in the ancestral side will be the most fruitful. That is why Gaya ji is also called Pitrurtha. Every year millions of people come here and do pindadan.
