Has it ever happened to you that a blue mark suddenly appeared on your hand or foot, even though you did not remember that you had hit something? Often people ignore it considering it to be their mistake.
But, Dr. Dana Figura, a foot surgeon from Los Angeles, says that there may be some medical reasons behind these marks, which are important to understand. Let us know about them.
What is ‘Purpura Simplex’?
According to Dr. Dana Figura, frequent bruising on the body without any major injury can be a common medical condition called purpura simplex. It is a vascular bleeding disorder, which is more common in women than in men. Although in most cases this is not harmful, recurring unexplained bruising indicates that the blood vessels beneath your skin are fragile.
Why do blood vessels burst?
Just below our skin there are very small veins which are called capillaries. These capillaries are very delicate. These burst even with slight pressure or small shocks, which we cannot even remember.
There can be many reasons behind this-
- Changes in hormones- Blood capillaries are affected due to hormonal fluctuations in the body.
- Skin structure- Skin texture and thickness.
- Difference of collagen- Capillaries break easily due to lack of collagen present in the body, which supports the blood vessels, or due to difference in structure.
When does it become a matter of concern?
Although these blue marks are often normal, foot surgeon Dr. Figura explains that they should not always be dismissed as minor. Sometimes it can be a sign of some serious deficiency in the body, such as vitamin deficiency and anemia or iron deficiency.
Do not ignore these symptoms
If you are experiencing the following symptoms along with blue marks, you should immediately consult a doctor-
- Feeling very tired.
- Bleeding gums or nose bleeding.
- Excessive bleeding during periods.
