te80 year old Indrayya, resident of Langana, is a little different. Every day early in the morning he reaches the new place built by him. It is made entirely of granite, around which he himself has planted flower plants and waters them. After this, he touches the granite surfaces for a while and sits there quietly. According to Indrayya, this is their ‘future home’. This is his own tomb, which he built while he was alive. Its cost is a bit high, Rs 12 lakh!

Nakka Indrayya, resident of Lakshmipur in Jagtial district, has built his tomb while he is alive, which the local people call the “Granite Palace”. About Rs 12 lakh has been spent on this tomb. It is five feet deep and more than six feet long. It is made entirely of granite so that it never deteriorates. He built his grave next to the grave of his late wife. An artisan was specially brought from Tamil Nadu to build this tomb.

Every morning Indrayya reaches his grave. Let’s sit there for a while. There is no fear on their faces, but there is relief that everything has been prepared as per their wishes. He tells those who ask about his grave, “This is my house, which I built myself. After I die, I will be laid to rest here, so I built it the way I wanted.”

I will not be a burden on anyone

Indrayya’s childhood was full of difficulties. He became orphan after the death of his father at the age of 10 and started working since childhood. Later, he worked in the construction field in Dubai for 45 years. After returning to India, he was living off his savings. But, after the death of his wife he started feeling lonely. He has four children, but has decided not to depend on them for his funeral. He says, “I don’t want to be a burden on anyone. There is no need to be afraid of death. Everyone has to die. I too have to die. At least I know where I will be buried.” This is his answer regarding his grave.
