New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday explained the hospitalization of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar.
The party stated that this action was taken in accordance with a directive from the Delhi High Court, which mandated monitoring of his health.
The ruling party also criticized opposition factions, questioning if they would have preferred Wangchuk’s health to decline just to maintain a ‘political spectacle.’
Earlier that day, Delhi Police intervened and forcibly relocated Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital, following medical advice and the court’s orders.
In response to the situation, BJP spokesperson and former Union minister Shahnawaz Hussain remarked that the high court had instructed that Wangchuk’s health be closely observed.
Hussain stated, ‘He has been taken to the hospital for a medical assessment to ensure his well-being. That is the sole reason for his admission.’
Amit Malviya, head of the BJP’s IT department, emphasized that the authorities acted with compassion, balancing the court’s orders with the necessity of safeguarding life.
Malviya shared on X that Wangchuk’s initial medical report is now public, noting that the examination was conducted with his consent.
‘What is the basis for the outrage? Following the Delhi High Court’s orders, the authorities moved him to a hospital to aid his recovery after his health declined during the fast,’ he stated.
Malviya further challenged the opposition, asking, ‘Would they have preferred his condition to worsen just to keep up a political show?’
‘Providing timely medical assistance in such circumstances is the responsible choice, not a topic for contrived controversy,’ he concluded.
Numerous opposition figures, including Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, and Uddhav Thackeray, criticized the government after Wangchuk’s forcible removal from Jantar Mantar.
