Lord Parshuram always raised his halberd for the sake of religion, Gods and Goddesses used to tremble due to his anger. But do you know that Lord Parshuram had cut the throat of his own mother Renuka, that too on the orders of his father Rishi Jamdagni.

This story is very touching and related to religious teachings. Let us know about it in detail.

Why did Parashuram’s father get angry?

Lord Parshuram is considered a symbol of bravery. He was a great devotee of his parents. His mother Renuka was extremely pious, devoted and brilliant. One day when she went to fetch water from the river, she saw a king and a queen in love, which created a momentary feeling of infatuation in her mind. Sage Jamdagni came to know about this, because he was an ascetic and a trikaalgya. He considered this “mental deviation” a sin and ordered his sons to cut off their mother’s head.

Parashuram’s father was pleased with his son.

When the first four sons (Vyasu, Vishwavasu, Shutasan and Vasu) refused, the sage cursed them. Parashurama obeyed his father’s orders and beheaded his mother. Sage Jamdagni was pleased with his son Parshuram and said that whatever boon you want, ask for it. Then Parashurama had said- ‘Give me the boon of reviving my mother and also return my brothers to their old form.’ The sage granted this boon and Renuka Mata came back to life.

Where did you repent?

Although Parshuram ji had obeyed his father’s orders, he deeply repented for the crime of slitting his mother’s throat. It is believed that Lord Parshuram ji had performed severe penance by going to “Mahadev Temple” or “Pashupatinath Temple” (in some beliefs, Pashupatinath of Nepal) located in North India as a form of repentance. Furthermore, “Parshuram Kund” and “Parshuram Tapasthal” exist at many places in India where he went for penance, such as: Parashuram Kund (Arunachal Pradesh), Janapav (Madhya Pradesh) and Renuka Tirtha (Himachal Pradesh).
