Akshay Kumar has approached the court demanding protection of his personality rights amid the growing threat of deepfake videos. Hearing the petition, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday said that it will pass an interim order to provide security to the Bollywood actor. The court said such content “not only harms their reputation but also has serious consequences”. Justice Arif Doctor, while hearing the case, has adopted a positive attitude on the demand of the actor.

The actor, also known as Akshay Hariom Bhatia, was hearing a civil suit filed by him, seeking a ban on unauthorized use and commercial exploitation of his image.

Charges against deepfakes and AI content

In his petition, Akshay has highlighted the rampant misuse of his name, screen name “Akshay Kumar”, image, similarity, voice, his style and mannerisms through AI-generated and deepfake content. The actor has alleged that fake videos, duplicative content goods, misleading advertisements and social media profiles have been circulated on platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and various e-commerce sites.

Impact on goodwill and reputation

“Such acts cause serious and irreparable damage to the plaintiff’s goodwill and reputation, dilute his personality and publicity rights, mislead the public and amount to unfair competition and unjust enrichment,” the plea said.
