RG Kar’s rape and murder victim’s mother, on Saturday, alleged that she sustained a head injury in the police action during a rally at West Bengal’s state secretariat ‘Nabanna’, which was called to mark a year of the horrific incident which shook the nation. The victim’s mother claimed that her ‘shankha’ (traditional conch shell bangle) was broken and she sustained head injuries during the police action.
Chaos erupted in Kolkata when the protesters tried to march towards Nabanna, the state secretariat, which houses the office of CM Mamta Banerjee, despite police warnings and were lathi-charged during the rally. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for “failing to protect women”.
The mother of the RG Kar victim claimed that her shankha was broken and she sustained a head injury in the scuffle. “Why are they stopping us like this? All we want is to reach Nabanna and seek justice for my daughter,” the mother said.
Last year, the young doctor’s rape and murder at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata shook the nation, prompting the victim’s family and doctors to raise their voices against the crime and hold a protest rally. Sanjay Roy, a civic police volunteer, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the case.
However, the victim’s family was not convinced with the trial in the case and expressed their dissatisfaction with the probe in a meeting with CBI Director Praveen Sood in Delhi. The victim’s family, along with several other protesters, called for a massive rally at Nabanna, hoping to meet the Chief Minister. However, due to tight security arrangements along the route.
“Police baton-charged protesters at the Park Street crossing in central Kolkata as agitators tried to breach the barricades in their attempt to head towards the Vidyasagar Setu after ignoring police warnings not to move beyond the Rani Rashmoni Road assembly point,” PTI reported.
