The country’s first IAS officer Satyendranath Tagore was born on 1 June 1842 in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He was the eldest son of Maharishi Debendranath Tagore and Sharda Devi. Born into the prestigious Tagore family, Satyendranath was the elder brother of Rabindranath Tagore. Like other members of the family, he had liberal and progressive thoughts since childhood.

How to become IAS?
Satyendranath Tagore received his early education at the Presidency College, Kolkata. Being the major center of Western education in British India, this college deeply influenced his mind and thoughts. In 1862, Satyendranath Tagore went to England to appear for the Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination, which at that time was held only in London. The process was difficult and specifically designed to favor British candidates.
Breaking racial discrimination, he became the first Indian civil servant in 1863. This was a watershed moment in India’s colonial history and paved the way for Indians who dreamed of serving within their country’s governing system.
