Who was Mossad spy M’: The slain operative behind Israel’s Iran attack campaign

New Delhi: The tensions in Middle East refuses to die down due to US-Iran war fallout. Amid all the regional friction, Israel’s Mossad spy agency  has said that one of its senior operative, who was part of ‘Operation Roaring Lion’ died outside the country. Israel has identified the slain operative only as ‘M’.

While celebrating Israel’s 78th Independence Day, Mossad chief  David Barnea publicly honored the agent ‘M’, and credited him with leading missions. Barnea emphasised the said operation was important in shaping Israel’s success against Iran.

Who was agent ‘M’?

Though the agent M’s identity has not been officially revealed, Israel’s Times of Israel daily identified slain operative was Erez Shimoni (50). It is said that Shimoni reportedly served the spy agency for nearly 30 years. Described as composed and deeply professional, Shimoni was known for maintaining a low profile while handling high-profile assignments. Israeli government has appreciated agent M for his contribution to the security of the state.

From shadow to spotlight: M’s final mission

M’s life took an unexpected turn when the tourist boat overturned on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy on May 28, 2023. Reports suggested that he was on overseas mission at that time of the accident. He was killed alongside two other members of Italian intelligence and the wife of the ship’s captain. The Israeli spy was buried in Ashkelon.

As per reports, senior Mossad officials were spotted at his funeral in covered faces. Israeli authorities say ‘M’ contributions are being revisited as Tel Aviv’s joint operation with the United States against Iran continues to unfold.
