What was the crime?

Criminal Ratan Bai Jain was a resident of Delhi. After hearing the name of the death sentence, everyone would want to know the answer to the question, what was Ratan’s crime? He had committed such a serious crime that he was hanged directly. Actually, Ratan killed three girls. At the age of 35, Ratan was crucified due to this crime.

Ratan used to work as a manager in Sterility Clinic Clinic. He and three girls were also present in the clinic, whose Ratan knew. Ratan suddenly suspected that these girls were having an affair with her husband. Ratan’s suspicion increased to such an extent that he even decided to kill the three girls.

How to kill?

Ratan killed the three girls due to this suspicion. Ratan neither stabbed the girls’ knives, nor strangled them to death and used poison to carry out the crime. Ratan allegedly added poison to the girls’ food or their drinks. This poison was so dangerous that all three girls died immediately.

It is not that women were not sentenced to death after Ratan, but they were not hanged in the case of many women, but life imprisonment was given instead of punishment-a-death.

Many women were heard sentenced to death

One such case is of Seema Gavit and Renuka Shinde. These two sisters together performed kidnapping of 13 children. Also, 5 of these children were also killed. These women were sentenced by the Kolapur Sessions Court and later the Bombay High Court. The women filed mercy appeal several times to avoid this punishment, but former President Pranab Mukherjee also rejected her mercy appeal in the year 2014.

After the then President Pranab Mukherjee dismissed his mercy petitions, Gavit sisters knocked on the Bombay High Court, citing excessive delay in the decision on their petitions. After this, he got relief in the year 2022. His death sentence was converted into life imprisonment.

The case has been pending for a long time, but the Supreme Court has upheld their sentence.

Long debate on hanging sentence

There is a long debate on the death penalty. The death penalty is not given in many countries. This is a punishment where once a person is punished, he dies and later it came to light in the case that he was innocent, then there is no way to reverse the person’s sentence and bring him back.

Due to this, the Supreme Court believes that any method of punishment related to the fundamental right of life should be fair and appropriate. Therefore, the Supreme Court had come to the conclusion that according to Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, a limited oral hearing is required in all the cases of hanging. Due to this, the right to file a review petition is an important privilege given to the persons obtained.
