In the men’s high jump T63/42 category, Shailesh jumped 1.91 meters and won the gold medal and won the new championship record. This is India’s first medal in this tournament, which proved to be a proud moment for the country and Bihar.
From limited resources to a bigger point
Shailesh Kumar hails from Ratanpur village in Jamui district of Bihar. Shailesh, who belongs to a farmer family, faced difficulties since childhood. The family’s economic condition was limited, but Shailesh never thought of quitting his dreams. He said that he did not get enough facilities for sports in childhood, but he has achieved this position today on the strength of his hard work and confidence. Shailesh says, “Winning gold in front of domestic audience was a very special experience for me. I want other players like me to brighten their names in sports despite limited resources.”
Hard work and training fruit
The team started tight training 10 days before the tournament. Shailesh’s coach Ramesh Yadav said that Shailesh’s hard work, dedication and dedication helped him to make this record. He said, “Shailesh trained at least 4-5 hours every day. His focus and mental strength put him ahead of the rest of the contestants.” Shailesh’s training included special exercise, physical therapy and mental preparation to increase strength and agility. His routine started at 5 am and the practice went on till evening.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar tweeted and congratulated Shailesh. He said, “Heartfelt congratulations to Bihar’s son Shailesh Kumar on winning gold in T63/42 category and making championship records in the men’s high jump of World Para Athletics Championships 2025 held in New Delhi. Shailesh’s victory is a moment of pride not only Bihar but also for every Indian.” The state government has announced to honor Shailesh with Rs 75 lakh and citation under the Sports Award Scheme.

Shailesh’s parents expressed their happiness and pride. His father Rameshwar Kumar says, “We always wanted Shailesh to do something big. His hard work and dedication has illuminated the name of the whole family today.” Mother Sita Devi said that her son never retreated even under difficult circumstances.
There is a great performance before
Shailesh Kumar has been in the game earlier also. In February 2025, he won a silver medal at the Chennai National Para Olympic Games. In 2024, India represented India at the Paris Para Olympics, although he missed winning the medal that time. Now he has become the second Bihari player to participate in the Para Olympic Games and has set a new record by winning the gold medal.
