Birha singer Saroj Sargam, a resident of Vindhya city of Mirzapur, UP’s city, made a mark on YouTube. His channel Saroj Sargam Mirzapur has 64 thousand subscribers so far and has uploaded around 40 videos. But as soon as Navratri started, his channel came into controversy. Saroj made objectionable comments on mother Durga and Hindu deities in some of his songs, causing uproar in social media and Hindu organizations.
Who is Saroj Sargam and why there was a dispute?
Saroj Sargam hails from Madihan area of Mirzapur and is known for Birha songs. His songs are often based on local culture and deities. But recently a video of him went viral, in which alleged objectionable remarks were made about Mahishasura and mother Durga. Despite being an actress and singer, Saroj Sargam sang the song Birha associated with the Mahishasura demon in her video. The thumbnail of the video was also disputed in which abuses were seen for the gods and goddesses. Because of this, people on social media also started demanding their arrest.
Why did Hindu organizations open front?
Leaders of the Vishwa Hindu organization and Vishwa Hindu Parishad described this video as hurting religious sentiments. District President Mata Sahai Mishra said that strict action should be taken against Saroj Sargam. The thumbnail of the video was abused for the deities, which further increased the dispute.
Police action and arrest
Mirzapur SSP Soment Burma confirmed that Saroj Sargam and her husband Ramamilan Bind had been arrested. Police said the disputed video has been removed from YouTube and interrogation is on. Saroj’s family is also being questioned.
