Who is Praful Hinge? SRH pacer becomes 1st bowler to take three wickets in opening over of IPL

New Delhi: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer Praful Hinge delivered a sensational first over on IPL debut against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Monday, April 13.

The right-arm pacer took three wickets in his very first over and removed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (0), Dhruv Jurel (0) and Lhuan-dre Pretorius (0), leaving RR reeling at 1/3 after the opening over. This is the first time in IPL history that a bowler has picked up three wickets in the opening over.

There have been 32 instances of a bowler taking two wickets in the opening over of an IPL innings. Hinge’s first IPL wicket came on his second ball, when he removed youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for a golden duck with a hard length delivery.

Two balls later, he struck again and dismissed Dhruv Jurel. He bowled just outside off, and Jurel made a mistake of playing it with an angled bat, and the thick inside-edge uprooted the off-stump.

Hinge dismissed debutant Lhuan Dre Pretorius on the final ball of the over. He bowled a full delivery on the pads and played a good shot, but hit it straight to the fielder at deep backward square-leg, leaving Rajasthan in deep trouble at the end of the first over.

Who is Praful Hinge?

Praful Hinge made his first-class debut for Vidarbha in October 2024 and took 16 wickets in 11 innings in the last Ranji Trophy season at an average of 26.37. He was playing only his second T20 match in senior cricket, with the first one coming against Andhra in December 2025 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

He came into the spotlight during the inaugural edition of the Vidarbha Pro T20 League last year. He played a crucial role in Neco Master Blasters’ title-winning campaign. Hinge started playing cricket around the age of 12. SRH regular captain Pat Cummins is his idol and always wanted to share the dressing room with him.

He has also been inspired by the Indian pacer Umesh Yadav, who is also his Vidarbha senior, with whom he opened the bowling on his debut in the shortest format. Hinge has played a total of 10 first-class matches and picked up 27 wickets, and has also featured in six List A games, taking five wickets.
