Who is Mohammad Baqer Jolkadr?

Mohammad Baqer Jolkadra was born in 1954 in Fasa city of Iran. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Tehran University. His wife is Sadigeh Begum Hejazi, who has been the head of the Office of Women and Family Affairs at the Organization of Islamic Culture and Communication since 2007.

His family’s influence is also seen at the international level. His son-in-law Kazem Gharibabadi is Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Vienna and also represents the country at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Remained active even before the Islamic Revolution

Before the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Jolakadr was associated with an organization named ‘Mansoorun’. This group was considered one of several revolutionary organizations active in Iran at that time. In 1978, he and Mohsin Rezai were also accused of being involved in the murder of an American engineer and an oil company manager. Later, under UN Security Council Resolution 1747, he was also included in the sanctions list due to his links with Iran’s nuclear and missile program.

Important role related to IRGC’s intelligence system

After the Islamic Revolution, a new structure was formed by merging several groups including Mansoorun, which later laid the foundation of the intelligence unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Leaders like Jolakadr, Mohsin Rezai and Ahmed Wahedi are considered to have played an important role in establishing this system. This intelligence structure later became an important part of Iran’s security system.

Played a big role in Iran-Iraq war

During the Iran-Iraq war that lasted from 1980 to 1988, Djokrad held the rank of Brigadier General and was counted among the top military commanders. He is also considered the co-founder and commander of the military division Ramadan Garrison. The camp was created in 1983 and its main function was to conduct activities outside Iran. Later this structure became the foundation of the Quds Force, the foreign branch of the IRGC. During the war, this camp provided training to Iran-backed groups in Iraq and worked closely with many Shia organizations.

Held important positions in IRGC for a long time

Even after the end of the Iran–Iraq War, Djalkadr remained in important positions in the IRGC for a long time. From 1989 to 1997, he served as Chief of the Joint Staff of the IRGC, the third-ranking position in the command structure. After this, from 1997 to 2005, he became the Deputy Commander in Chief, i.e. the second most powerful officer of the organization. In his rapidly growing role, his closeness to the then senior commanders Mohsin Rezai and Rahim Safavi is also considered important.

Name remained in political controversies also

When reformist politics were emerging in Iran in the late 1990s, Djalkadr and some other military officers openly opposed it. He was also accused of being involved in the attack on the university hostel on July 9, 1999. Apart from this, he had also signed the letter of 24 military officers, in which the then President Mohammad Khatami was warned.
