Ever since Gautam Gambhir became the head coach of Team India, he has been continuously in the headlines. Due to giving opportunities to young players in Team India and excluding senior players, he is being targeted by some people and is also getting praise from some people. Team India’s performance has also been full of ups and downs during his tenure. The Indian team has won tournaments like Champions Trophy and Asia Cup during this period. But despite this, Gambhir believes that in his coaching career, he will never forget that series, which gave the biggest blow to Team India.
After making Kolkata Knight Riders the champion of IPL 2024 as a mentor, Gautam Gambhir took over the responsibility of the head coach of Team India in July 2024. Since then the Indian team has seen many big changes. The captaincy of all three formats has changed, while veterans like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin have retired in one way or the other. During this period, Team India won the Champions Trophy, while the team consisting of young players also drew the Test series in England.
However, during Gambhir’s tenure, India had to face defeat in the Test series in Australia. But the series that gave the most pain to the entire team and fans including Gambhir was the home Test series defeat at the hands of New Zealand. Speaking to Aakash Chopra in a Star Sports interview, Gambhir said, “I don’t think I will ever forget this in my coaching career. And I shouldn’t forget it either. I have told this to the team as well. It is important to move forward but sometimes it is important to remember the past as well. Because if you forget the past, you start taking things for granted.”
Gambhir said that even in the dressing room, the team is reminded that New Zealand had defeated and hence never give a single chance to anyone. Seriously, any Indian fan will hardly be able to forget that series for many years to come. New Zealand not only won the Test series, but also clean swept the Indian team in the 3-match series. For the first time since 2011, the Indian team had lost a Test series on home soil and for the first time in its entire Test history, it had to face the embarrassment of a clean sweep on home soil.
