PM Modi and Donald Trump
The White House has changed its fact sheet on the India-US trade deal. It has removed the mention of pulses from the sheet and also changed the wording regarding India’s proposed purchase of $500 billion. America has changed it from commitment to intent.
Let us tell you that Congress had targeted the government on Tuesday regarding pulses in the deal. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge said, Dal has been quietly added to the new White House fact sheet released on February 9, which was not a part of the India-US joint statement released on February 6, 2026.
What’s in the fact sheet?
The White House released a fact sheet on the trade deal on Tuesday. It stated the key terms of the agreement such as India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all American industrial goods and a range of American food and agricultural products. These include dried distillers grains, red sorghum, tree nuts, some pulses, soybean oil, wine and spirits and other products.
India has also committed to buy more American products and purchase more than US$500 billion worth of American products in energy, information and communication technology, agriculture, coal and other sectors.
India has maintained the highest tariffs on the US of any major economy in the world, with an average of 37 per cent on agricultural products and more than 100 per cent on some vehicles, the sheet said. India also has a history of imposing highly protectionist non-tariff barriers that have restricted many US exports to India.
According to the document, the US and India will quickly implement this framework in the coming weeks and work on an interim agreement to finalize a mutually beneficial BTA aimed at ensuring benefits for American workers and businesses.
It said that India will remove non-tariff barriers affecting bilateral trade in priority sectors. The US and India will negotiate rules of origin so that the agreed benefits accrue primarily to both countries.
What did Congress say?
After the fact sheet came out, the opposition raised questions on the government. Congress said that the lies of Modi government have been exposed. The White House, i.e. the office of US President Trump, released the fact sheet of the India-US deal. It is clearly said that India will also buy some pulses from America. Also, the goods worth 500 billion dollars that India has promised to buy from America also include agricultural products. Both these things were hidden from the countrymen till now. Why.
At the same time, Union Minister Piyush Goyal has clearly said that no compromise has been made with the interests of farmers in the deal. He said that under the trade deal, the interests of sensitive sectors like agriculture and dairy will be protected. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that any product that can harm Indian farmers has not been included in the agreement. He said that no Indian tariff concession has been given on products like soybean, maize, rice, wheat, sugar, coarse grains, poultry, dairy, banana, citrus fruits, green peas, chickpeas, moong, oilseeds etc.
