The city of Karnataka where the entire set of Sholay’s Ramgarh was set up is named Ramnagar. In Kannada it is called Ramanagaram. The entire set was erected in the hilly area of Ramnagar. The set was set up on the outskirts of the city where the population was negligible. The real name of the part where the set was installed is Ramdevara Betta. Because of the shooting of the film, that part is called Sholay Hills.

Ramanagara is at a distance of 50 kilometers from the capital Bengaluru. It can be reached via Mysore Highway. An imaginary village was set up in Ramnagar for the shooting of the film. Temples were built. Houses were built. Even the road was constructed. The responsibility of preparing it was of veteran art director Ram Yadekar.

Road built in village for Sholay, called Sippy Nagar
Being on the outskirts of the city, there was not even a paved road here. To make the shooting of the film and commuting easier, a road was built in the village. The filmmakers constructed a road there connecting it to the main highway. The part where Sholay was shot in Ramnagar was named after the film’s director Ramesh Sippy. Today it is also called Sippy Nagar.
Ramnagar is now known for silk industry and adventure tourism.
How is Sholay’s Ramgarh?
Sholay’s Ramgarh i.e. Ramnagar is known for many things. The first is the trekking done on the hills there. Tourists come here from far and wide and explore it. This part is known for adventure tourism. The second and biggest reason is silk industry. It is claimed that Asia’s largest silk market is located here. This is the reason why it is also called Silk City. Silk is prepared here.
Many scenes of the film were shot on the hills of Ramnagar.
The third reason is the Granite Hill here. Which attracts tourists where populations of different types of birds are visible. Ramnagar district is surrounded by seven hills Shivaramgiri, Yatrirajgiri, Somagiri, Krishnagiri, Revan Siddheshwar Hill, Jala Siddheshwar Hill and Sidilakallu Hill. Near the city there is a temple of Arkeshwar built in Vijayanagara style. It is said that the temple was renovated by Krishna Raja Wadiyar III.
Ramnagar is home to highly endangered bird species such as the long-billed vulture and the yellow-throated bulbul. Their population is seen here.
