The then Defense Minister V.K. Krishna Menon flew with APJ Abdul Kalam.
APJ studying aeronautical engineering Abdul Kalam’s dream was to fly a fighter aircraft. But his dream could not come true. Only eight pilots were to be selected. He was in the ninth place. On the other hand, destiny had decided something else for him. Big and big. He had to do something huge, on which the entire country had to be proud. He was called the missileman of India. He has a special place among the famous scientists of India who makes identity in the world. He was the architect of satellite launch and indigenous development of strategic missiles. His achievements like SLV 3, Agni and Prithvi added new confidence in the country.
He has an unforgettable contribution in making India self-reliant in defense and air-sky systems. As President, he pulled a big line. During his tenure in this post, he met more than eight lakh students and filled his heart a pledge and enthusiasm to make India great. He was the President of the public in the true sense. On the occasion of death anniversary, read some inspiring episodes of his life…
Failure did not disappoint
Kalam could not become a pilot. But he was satisfied that the aircraft may not be able to fly but at least they are helping to fly. In his first appointment of Senior Scientist Assistant in DTD & P. (Air), he was affiliated to the technical center (aviation). He has already succeeded in designing a paralytic target aircraft in collaboration with his officer Incharge R.vardarajan.
Director D.Nelakanthan praised it a lot. He spent some time in Kanpur to train the aircraft. He also got success in Dart targets and vertical flying and developing platforms of landing in return to Delhi. Three years later, he was linked to the aeronautical development establishment launched in Bangalore.

Indigenous Hovercraft (hovering aircraft) Nandi.
Not just to see, it’s to fly
The four -member scientists were leading the Kalam lead to the Kalam who was to develop indigenous hovercrafts (hovering vehicles) as a ground equipment machine (jam). Kalam Saheb wrote about it, “This encouraging enterprise to prepare a vehicle with winged, light and intense machine opened the windows of my brain. I soon saw at least one figurative properties between the hovercraft and aircraft.
Eventually it took seven years for the Wright brothers to prepare the first airplane. It was named after Lord Shiva’s vehicle “Nandi”. This model was beyond our expectations to be given the entire size and paint. We had only its structure. I told my colleagues that this is a flying machine. Prepared not by a group of craze but with the merit of engineers. It is not just made to see. Fly with it. “
Menon stayed in flight even after stopping
In this “Nandi”, the then Defense Minister V.K. Krishna Menon flew with Kalam Saheb. However, the officials accompanying him were not in favor of Menon’s flight with an inexperienced citizen pilot (Kalam) for security reasons. A group captain, who has experienced a flight of thousands of hours, offered Kalam to come out of the hovercraft, offering to fly the aircraft. Kalam refused to assure his work. Menon laughed and indicated to fly the aircraft to Kalam. Satisfied in the return, Menon said and prepare a powerful aircraft and call me to ride on it.

Abdul Kalam did not learn to be disappointed in life.
Rocket engineer again
Further, this plan hanged in the balance. Menon had lost the post of minister. In the changed system, imports from foreign countries were considered appropriate. Kalam was disappointed. His heart was engaged in “Nandi”. He got excited again at some intervals. Director Dr. Mediratta asked about Nandi. The answer was that he is ready to fly. This time Kalam was accompanied by Prof. MGK Mainon, Director of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Within a week, Kalam was called for interview for the post of “Rocket Engineer” of the Indian Space Research Committee. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai took the interview in Bombay (now Mumbai).
Professor Menon and Deputy Secretary of Atomic Energy Commission Saraf were also present on the occasion. Praising Professor Sarabhai with a free throat, Abdul Kalam wrote in the Wings of Fire, “His questions were not going to test my existing merit or skill. Rather, he was related to the search for the possibilities that were within me. He was looking at me as if he was examining me in a wide context. I felt like that truth, in which I have been involved in a big dream in a big dream.” It was to be installed but the next evening Abdul Kalam was informed about his selection.
Dialogue with 1.5 crore youth in the last two decades
Abdul Kalam did not learn to be disappointed in life. He always moved forward from a positive attitude between every failure of every failure. He took the failures as a lesson. He is credited with the leadership of achievements like satellite launch vehicle, indigenous development of missiles, SLV 3, ‘Agni’ and ‘Prithvi’.
He has a unique contribution in making the country self-reliant in air-sky systems. As the eleventh President, he got good fortune to the leadership of the country. He turned it into an opportunity to join students and youth. Of course, his original identity was of a scientist, but the country became familiar with other aspects of his inspiring personality as President. While in the presidency, he interacted with eight lakh students of the country. He inspired him to contribute to make the country great through his future building efforts. His activism was that in the last two decades of life, he had a communication with more than 1.5 crore youth through various programs.
Success did not confront
At Rameshwar Panchayat Board School, Kalam’s science teacher Subrahmanya Iyer told the students how birds fly? This learning inspired Kalam to fly towards the goal of life. He continued to live life by doing something meaningful and with this thinking, he kept inspiring the youth and students to move forward. In 1993, at the farewell ceremony of VS Arunachalam, Scientific Advisor to the then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao, Rao asked Kalam why did you leave the defense research and development work?
Kalam’s reply was that I am 62 years old now. Rao almost rebuked and told him that I am 72 years old and I am the Prime Minister. After this, he asked for the file and wrote that Kalam will be the head of the Defense Research and Development Organization till further orders. After this, Kalam played this responsibility till the age of 70 years. Kalam wrote in his book “Vijay Bhav”, “I had got some achievements in the past but all this is the past. I am happy that I did some good work. But how long I would have enjoyed those achievements.”
The successes never confirmed Kalam. He was trying to do something better throughout life. He used to say, “Dreams are not those that we see in sleep: rather dreams are those who do not let us sleep.” Kalam’s dreams were to make the country better and self -sufficient in the defense sector. His life was dedicated to really change them.
