Mundan rites
Mundan rites have great importance in Hinduism. Mundan Sanskar is one of the sixteen rites of Hinduism, which is also known as ‘Chaul Karma’. This is a haircut ritual for the first time after the birth of the child. There are all three reasons for religious, astrological and scientists behind this. The auspicious time for Mundan Sanskar is determined by looking at the birth chart, date, constellation, day and lagna of the child. Generally some auspicious yoga is made as follows.
It is believed that it is usually shaved in the end of the first year of the child’s birth, or in the third, fifth or seventh year. In some traditions, girls are also shaved in the second or fourth year. On the other hand, if the doctors are to be believed, it is appropriate to shave only after joining the bones of the child’s head completely. Which is usually between 6 months to one and a half years.
Auspicious dates and days
- Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi Tithi are considered auspicious for Mundan Sanskar and Mundan Sanskar can be performed on these dates.
- Mundan on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday is considered auspicious. However, girls should not be shaved on Friday.
- Ashwini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hast, Punarvasu, Chitra, Swati, Jyestha, Shravan, Dhanishtha and Shatabhisha Nakshatra are considered especially auspicious for Mundan Sanskar.
When to get shaved according to the zodiac?
- When the Sun is in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Capricorn and Aquarius, then it is considered auspicious to shave.
- Mundan is auspicious in the ascendant or navamsa of the second, third, fourth, Shashtham, seventh, ninth or twelfth zodiac signs.
When should not be shaved?
- During the days of Chaturmas, Manglik works like Mundan are forbidden, because Lord Vishnu is in a sleeping state during this period.
- It is considered inauspicious to shave the birth month, more month (Malamas) and Jyestha son in the eldest month.
- According to some scholars, shaving in birth constellation or birth sign is considered prohibited. Mundan is considered prohibited when the moon is situated in the fourth, eighth, dwadash and enemy house.
- If the mother is 5 months or more pregnant, then the elder boy should not be shaved. In these days, shaving is usually considered inauspicious.
What is connection with planetary constellations?
- Mundan rites have special significance in astrology because it helps to balance the effects of the baby’s planetary constellations.
- It is believed that the first hair on the baby’s head reflect the deeds and negative effects of the previous birth. These negativities are removed by shaving, which gives the baby a new and pure start.
- By shaving in the auspicious time, the position of the planets in the birth chart of the baby is strong and positive energy is communicated. It ensures happiness, prosperity, intelligence and good health in the future of the baby.
- This rite is considered to protect the child from evil forces and negative effects. According to some beliefs, Mundan increases mental clarity and concentration, which improves the child’s intellectual development.
