WhatsApp CarPlay Beta brings chat list, calls, and quick messaging

New Delhi: WhatsApp is quietly testing a new way to use its app inside cars, and it could change how people message on the move. The company has rolled out a beta version of a native Apple CarPlay app, giving drivers more control than the earlier Siri-only setup.

The update is still limited to testers, but it signals a clear shift in how messaging apps are adapting to connected vehicles. According to details shared by WABetaInfo, the new version brings a proper interface designed for quick glances and minimal distraction.

WhatsApp CarPlay app adds chat list and quick actions

The biggest change is the addition of a dedicated chat list screen. As soon as users open WhatsApp on CarPlay, they can see their recent conversations, usually covering around 20 to 25 days. This makes it easier to quickly identify who to message without relying only on voice commands.

The interface shows basic details like whether a chat is muted or pinned. It also highlights unread messages with a blue dot, which helps users spot pending conversations at a glance. At the same time, WhatsApp has restricted access to full chat history inside CarPlay. That choice looks intentional, as drivers are not expected to read long conversations while on the road.

Calls and favourites get separate tabs

Apart from Chat messages, the new CarPlay version also introduces a more organised structure with separate sections for calls and favourite contacts. Users can view their call history in one place, including incoming, outgoing, and missed calls. The app shows basic details like contact name, profile icon, and call timing, making it easier to decide whether to return a call.

There is also a favourites section that brings priority contacts to the front. This saves time and avoids scrolling through long lists. From both the calls and favourites sections, users can quickly start a call or send a message.

Another small but useful addition is the “New Message” option placed at the top of the chat screen. This allows users to reach out to any contact directly, even if they are not in the recent chat list.

Beta rollout hints at wider push

For now, the feature is available only to beta testers using the TestFlight app on iOS. A wider rollout timeline has not been shared yet. For users who rely on WhatsApp while driving, this update could make things simpler. It brings more visibility and control, without turning the car screen into a distraction.
