What do experts say?

Fareha Shanam, senior dietitian of Gangaram Hospital, Delhi, says that dialysis patients should give priority to protein in their diet. Because the work which is usually done by the kidney is being done by a machine. In such a situation, a large amount of protein gets removed from the body. Therefore, during this period the body needs a lot of protein. The amount of protein is decided according to the body weight of the patient.

eat protein rich foods

According to experts, for high protein diet the patient should be given milk and milk products. Also consume pulses. Some people believe that chickpeas should not be consumed if one has kidney problems. However, it is nothing like that. These things can also be given to the patient in limited quantities. If you can eat non-veg, it is good to consume egg, fish and chicken also. You can reduce your protein diet for the rest of the day. But on the days when you have to go for dialysis, take only high protein diet.

How much liquid can one take during dialysis?

Fareha Shanam explains that dialysis patients usually have fluid restriction, because urine output is very low during this period. In such a situation, the calculation says that the amount of urine you are passing is calculated. That means, if you are releasing 300ml of urine throughout the day then you can take 800ml of liquid.
