This country is a southern Caribbean island with a population of only 1,56,000. The official language of Curaçao, spread over 444 square kilometers, is Papiamento, which is a unique blend of Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch. Interestingly, their language is a mixture of English and French. However, people here also speak Dutch, English and Spanish.

Turtles, corals, tropical fishes can be easily seen here. This is the reason why the natural beauty here is called the treasure of this country which gives impetus to the economy here.

How did the country emerge from slavery and become an independent country?
The temperature in Curacao remains 27-30°C throughout the year. One special thing about this island country is that it is outside the cyclone belt, which means the risk of storms is very less. It is claimed that Arawak and Caquetio tribes lived here, who came from Venezuela. Their work was fishing and farming. Spanish explorers arrived here in 1499 and it came under the control of Spain. Spain enslaved the people here and sent them to other islands. Spain hoped to find gold, silver and other mines here, but this did not happen.

In the year 1634, the Dutch West India Company won it from Spain and it became a major trading center and a port for slave trade. It was during that time that Willemstad began to develop, which is today the capital of this country. Due to the arrival of people from different countries, a mixture of many cultures is seen here. For example, the influence of Dutch on architecture, administration and education, African influence on music, food and language and Latin American influence on business and food are visible here. For a long time this country was part of the Netherlands Antilles. After its disintegration, it got the status of a self-governing country in the year 2010.
