How was the research done?
About 1900 patients who had serious kidney disease and were also at risk of death were included in the research. All these patients were admitted in ICU. Of these, 654 patients were given statin therapy in ICU. The remaining patients did not receive statins. Research revealed that the 30-day mortality rate was significantly lower in patients taking statins. Statin therapy reduced the risk of death by 52%.
This research also revealed that statins not only reduce cholesterol, but are also beneficial in acute kidney disease and intracerebral hemorrhage. It can reduce swelling in the body. Can improve the efficiency of blood vessels. However, experts agree that the decision to start statins in every patient should be based on the individual clinical situation.
