Rajasthan Water Crisis: The process of the long-awaited Mahi-Jawai Water Project for the four major districts of Rajasthan Pali, Jalore, Sirohi and Barmer has finally started. After the initiative and budget announcement of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, concrete steps have been taken towards this ambitious scheme. The estimated cost of this project has been estimated at Rs 7000 crore, which will not only be a permanent solution to the drinking water problem of these districts, but will also open new avenues for irrigation. The State Water Resources Department has approved the preparation of DPR (detailed project report) of the project in Jaipur.

Administrative and technical approval of Rs 15.60 crore has already been released. Vapkos Limited has been handed over the work order and the company has submitted its initial report to the department. Under the project, the monsoon surplus water of Mahi and Som River will be transported to Jawai dam through water sources like Jaisamand, Matrukundia, Meja Dam. After this, pure drinking water will be supplied from here to those districts where water crisis has been maintained for years.

Why are Banswara and Dungarpur people protesting?
- Cabinet Minister Joraram Kumawat said that this scheme will not only solve the problem of drinking water, but will also develop about 16,000 hectares of land as irrigated area. Also, this project will give new energy to agriculture and rural economy.
- However, some protest voices are also raising about this project. Some rural organizations in Banswara and Dungarpur districts believe that the water of Mahi Dam should first get their area, where irrigation requirements are still incomplete. Meanwhile, Jalore MP Lumbaram Chaudhary raised the issue in the Lok Sabha and demanded to ensure water supply from Mahi and Kadana Dam citing the previous agreements.
