IPL 2026 Opening Ceremony Cancelled: BCCI has canceled the opening ceremony of IPL 2026. This decision has been taken in memory of the 11 people killed in the stampede during the RCB victory procession in Bengaluru. Know the full reason, first match and closing ceremony updates.
BCCI IPL 2026 Decision: Cricket is not just a game but the sentiment of crores of people. But sometimes decisions have to be taken that give priority to humanity over sports. Something similar has happened this time too. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a big decision to cancel the opening ceremony of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Why was this decision taken?
This decision is not just a formal change, but a sensitive step. Last year, there was a stampede during the victory procession in Bengaluru after the victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). 11 people lost their lives in this tragic incident.
Keeping this incident in mind, BCCI decided that IPL 2026 will start without any grand opening ceremony, so that respect and tribute can be paid to those who lost their lives.

The first match will be held in Bengaluru only
The first match of IPL 2026 will be played on 28 March. The special thing is that this match will be held at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad will face each other. That means the tournament will start from the same city where the accident took place. This is the reason why BCCI thought it better to postpone the opening ceremony keeping in mind the atmosphere.
What will be the closing ceremony?
According to reports, the closing ceremony can be held before the final of IPL 2026. This match will be held on May 31 and the closing ceremony is also possible on the same day. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has hinted that the finale could be made a grand affair.
Such a decision has already been taken
This is not the first time that the opening ceremony of IPL has been cancelled. A similar decision was taken after the Pulwama attack in 2019. At that time, the amount kept for the opening ceremony was given to the families of the martyred CRPF soldiers.
How was the opening show last time?
The opening ceremony of IPL 2025 was held in Kolkata, in which stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Shreya Ghoshal, Disha Patani and Karan Aujla gave spectacular performances. But this time IPL will start with simplicity and sensitivity.
The cancellation of the opening ceremony of IPL 2026 is definitely a big change, but it also sends a clear message, humanity is above sports. This decision of BCCI shows that cricket is not just entertainment but also plays a responsibility towards the society. Now all eyes will be on March 28, when IPL will start without any fanfare, but with deep emotion.
