BAFTA Awards 2026: The 2026 BAFTA Film Awards delivered glamour, big wins and an unexpected live television moment that left audiences stunned. Host Alan Cumming was forced to briefly pause the ceremony after an on-air outburst occurred while Michael B. Jordan stood on stage.
The incident unfolded during the live BBC broadcast from London’s Royal Festival Hall. Nominee John Davidson, who lives with Tourette’s syndrome, involuntarily shouted explicit language during the event. Earlier in the evening, during BAFTA chair Sara Putt’s speech, Davidson called out phrases including “boring” and “f*** off”.

However, the situation escalated later when Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented the Best Visual Effects award. Another verbal tic echoed through the hall — this time including the N-word. The moment created visible confusion among attendees and viewers watching at home.
Cumming addressed the interruption with calm authority. He apologised to audiences for the “strong language” and clarified that the remarks were involuntary vocal tics linked to Tourette’s syndrome. Over the course of the evening, he stepped in twice to reiterate the explanation and urge viewers to respond with understanding rather than outrage.
Davidson is the real-life subject of I Swear, a film that explores life with Tourette’s syndrome. He is portrayed in the film by Robert Aramayo. Davidson has long advocated for awareness around neurological conditions and previously received recognition from Queen Elizabeth II for his efforts in highlighting the realities of living with Tourette’s.
At one point, Davidson exited the auditorium. Still, discussion around the incident continued both inside the venue and online. Social media quickly filled with reactions, ranging from shock to calls for greater empathy.
Despite the disruption, the ceremony regained its momentum. One Battle After Another emerged as the biggest winner of the night, while Sinners and the Indian film Boong also claimed major honours.
