Nigeria is a country which also has relations with India. India imports many things from Nigeria and also exports many things. According to the report of Trading Economics, India buys maximum oil from Nigeria.
What does India buy from Nigeria?
Apart from mineral fuel and oil, India imports oil seeds, fertilizers, aluminium, coffee, pearls, precious gems, rubber, zinc, iron, machinery, nuclear, reactors, boilers and many types of base metals from Nigeria. At the same time, Nigeria also imports many things from India. India sends many things to Nigeria including pharma products, vehicle parts, electric machinery and plastics.

Bilateral relations between India and Nigeria started in 1960. India established the National Defense Academy at Kaduma, Nigeria and the Naval War College at Port Harcourt, paving the way for Nigeria’s military training. India-Nigeria economic relations have also been quite special. More than 200 Indian companies are investing in sectors like manufacturing, telecommunication and pharmaceuticals.

Why is Nigeria special for India?

Not only this, Nigeria is an important member of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) and the Organization of Oil Producing Countries (OPEC). Both these organizations are important for India’s economic policy and diplomacy.
Relations between the two countries are 66 years old. These relations are from that period when India strongly supported the independence of African countries after its independence. It was during that period that the foundation of diplomatic relations between the two countries was laid. Nigeria also got independence in 1960. The country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited Nigeria in 1962. This visit strengthened the relations between the two countries.

Nigeria, with a population of 24 crores, is among the countries with the fastest growing population. The United Nations claims that by the year 2050, Nigeria’s population will touch 400 million. Nigeria is divided into two parts. There is a northern part where Muslims are in majority. There is more poverty here. At the same time, the second part is in the south-eastern part with Christian population. It is called a prosperous area. However, many cases of disputes and violence have also been seen between the two communities.
