Ram Charan’s Peddi, helmed by Buchi Babu Sana, has been in the news for all the wrong reasons since its premiere on June 4. The sports drama, touted as an inspiring family entertainer, has landed in for its portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor as Achiyamma and the intimate scene between her and Ram Charan.
Amid severe backlash over the “hypersexualisation” of her body, an old video of Janhvi speaking about objectification in the industry has resurfaced online. Weeks before the release of Peddi, the actress had candidly spoken about how she deals with uncomfortable shots and being sexualised without her consent.
What Did Janhvi Kapoor Say About Being ‘Objectified?’
On Raj Shamani’s podcast, stated that she’s not okay with filmmakers sexualising her without her consent. She said, “If a DOP puts a camera on some place that I’m not okay with, I should be able to say, nahi, ye nahi chalega mujhe nahi chahiye (no, I don’t want this) without me seeming unprofessional. Dheere, dheere haan. (Yes, slowly). Sometimes I’ve been polite, and I’ve been like, I need to pick my battles and I’ll fight them. But now, I’m a little bit like, mera jugaad nikaal dungi (I’ll find a solution). I’ll make my point clear someway or the other, but it’s important for me to seem polite.”
Janhvi added that filmmakers were also responsible for the issue. She explained that they often had a fixed idea of how a heroine should look and present herself. The Devara actress claimed that filmmakers frequently judge a female artist’s value in a project based on physical attributes. Recalling comments she had heard from them, she said that they would often argue that if an actress was to be seen in a bikini, it would be on the big screen and in their film.

Peddi Director Finally REACTS To Criticism
While is yet to break her silence, Buchi Babu Sana has addressed the criticism and said that he had not anticipated the scenes would be perceived so negatively by audiences. He admitted that those portions did not work the way he had originally planned.
The director explained that the intention behind Janhvi’s track was to present a light and playful love story between her character Achiyyamma and Ram Charan’s Peddi. He added that the idea had been to showcase a playful romance between the two characters, but they failed to execute it. The filmmaker promised to be more careful in the future.
