Liver cancer is a serious disease that occurs due to abnormal growth in liver cells. This problem often develops slowly and its initial symptoms are so mild that most people ignore them.
By the time it is detected, the disease has often progressed significantly. Therefore, it is very important to identify its symptoms and seek timely medical consultation. Dr. Mandeep Singh, co-founder of Art of Healing Cancer Center and surgical oncologist, explains what symptoms are seen in liver cancer and what should be done for prevention.
Common symptoms of liver cancer
One of the common symptoms of liver cancer is persistent pain or feeling of heaviness in the upper right part of the stomach. Apart from this, sudden weight loss, loss of appetite and constant fatigue can also be its signs. Some patients develop jaundice, in which the eyes and skin appear yellow. The stomach may swell, and urine may become dark in color and stool may become light in color. All these symptoms indicate that the liver is not functioning normally.
Who are most at risk?
Certain people may become vulnerable to liver cancer early. People who consume excessive alcohol for a long time, people infected with hepatitis B or C, people suffering from cirrhosis, people suffering from obesity and type 2 diabetes and those whose family has had liver cancer – all these people need to be more careful. Additionally, people exposed to toxic chemicals, such as aflatoxin, also have a higher risk of liver cancer.
What to do to avoid liver cancer?
It is very important to adopt some important measures to prevent this disease. Be sure to get vaccinated against hepatitis B and stay away from infected blood and needles to prevent hepatitis C. Limit or give up alcohol consumption. Control obesity and eat a balanced, nutritious diet. People who are at high risk should have their liver checked once or twice a year, including liver function tests and ultrasound.
