Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has not announced any fixed date for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission in her budget speech. At present, the government has maintained silence on this, due to which there is some disappointment among lakhs of employees.

Although no formal announcement was made, post-budget clarifications have indicated that the government has several proposals under consideration for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. In view of the demand of employee organizations and the completion of 10 years of the 7th Pay Commission in 2026, the government may bring it through a cabinet meeting in the next few months.

financial provisions in the budget

The government has increased the budget allocation for pension and salary. Experts believe that this increased amount can act as a buffer i.e. safe fund to implement the recommendations of the Pay Commission in future.

Focus on NPS (National Pension System)
In the budget, more emphasis has been laid on making NPS (New Pension Scheme) more attractive for government employees and reviewing the government contribution or benefits in it. The government is working on a formula by which employees can be guaranteed pension up to 40-50% of their final salary.

Usually, the Pay Commission is constituted 1.5 to 2 years before the date of implementation. The 7th Pay Commission came into effect on 1 January 2016. If the 8th Pay Commission is to be implemented from January 1, 2026, then the government will have to announce it in the next few weeks or months so that its calculations and report can be prepared.
