Weather today: IMD issues ‘yellow-alert’ for Delhi, Gurugram and Faridabad, THESE states to witness ‘heavy rain’

Delhi weather today: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad for Monday, warning of heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Light to moderate showers are expected through the day, intensifying by evening with strong winds reaching up to 40 kmph and frequent lightning strikes. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue through the night.

Rain to continue for next two days

Delhi-NCR isn’t getting a break from the rain just yet. According to IMD’s forecast, showers will continue on June 24 and 25, with repeated spells of rainfall likely throughout the day and night.

Tuesday’s forecast includes multiple rounds of thunderstorms, beginning in the morning and stretching into the late hours. Gurgaon and Faridabad remain under alert, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity expected to persist across both cities.

Delhi may witness its earliest monsoon in over ten years. The IMD has indicated that the monsoon could officially reach the capital by June 24. If so, it would be the earliest arrival since 2013, when the rains came on June 16.

In contrast, monsoon onset occurred on June 28 in 2023, June 30 in 2022, and as late as July 13 in 2021.

Monsoon advances across north India

The southwest monsoon has already advanced into most parts of Himachal Pradesh, the entire Ladakh and Kashmir region and large sections of Jammu and Punjab.

According to the IMD, conditions are highly favourable for the monsoon to extend further over Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, and the rest of Himachal and Jammu & Kashmir within the next two days.

Heavy rainfall forecast across central and western India

The monsoon surge is strong across the country. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over northwest India, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and the Konkan and Goa regions through June 26.

Madhya Pradesh is expected to see particularly intense rain, with extremely heavy showers likely on June 23 and 24.

As Delhi prepares for the monsoon’s full arrival, residents can expect more wet days, cooler temperatures and the typical chaos that comes with the city’s rainy season.
