New Delhi: India will face two time FIFA World Cup winners Uruguay in a high profile international friendly in Kolkata on Tuesday, just three days after suffering a 0-4 defeat against Brazil.
The short turnaround has left India with limited time to recover and prepare for another demanding opponent. The Blue Tigers struggled to match Brazil’s pace and intensity, and now face a Uruguay side known for aggressive pressing and quick ball recovery.
Uruguay recorded 147 high turnovers during FIFA World Cup qualifying, highlighting their ability to win possession in advanced areas. India head coach Khalid Jamil acknowledged the limited recovery period but stressed the quality of the South American side.
India defender Akash Mishra also admitted that preparation time has been short. However, he insisted that the players must quickly move on from the Brazil result and focus on the next challenge rather than dwelling on the defeat.
Uruguay are themselves undergoing a period of transition. The team no longer has the experienced attacking partnership of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, with both veterans having ended their international careers. Uruguay also endured a difficult 2026 World Cup campaign, finishing third in their group after defeats and draws against strong opposition.
Marcelo Bielsa subsequently left his position, with former Uruguay international Diego Forlan appointed as his successor. Forlan began his tenure with a 1-3 defeat against Japan but responded with a convincing 4-1 victory over South Korea.
Uruguay will now look to finish their tour with another victory, while Forlan has stressed the need to respect India’s attacking qualities and adapt to the humid Kolkata conditions.
For India, the match offers an immediate opportunity to respond after the Brazil setback. With little recovery time, the Blue Tigers will need to show resilience, discipline and greater intensity against another major South American opponent.
