In Indore, 8 people died and more than 100 are ill after drinking contaminated water. This accident happened due to dirty drainage water getting into the drinking water pipeline. The government has announced assistance of ₹2 lakh to the families of the deceased and action against officials.
Indore: Eight people died due to contaminated drinking water in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. More than a hundred people have been admitted to the hospital. This incident happened in Bhagirathpura area of Indore, the cleanest city of the country. This accident happened due to dirty water from drainage pipes getting mixed in the drinking water supplied by the Municipal Corporation. Of the eight people who died, six were women. Local people had complained that the water being supplied had a strange taste and smell since December 25.
Due to leakage in the drinking water pipeline, dirty water was mixed. Initial investigation revealed that waste from an illegal toilet built above the pipeline had mixed with the drinking water. For this serious negligence, two officers including the zonal officer have been suspended and a sub-engineer has been fired. The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also said that the government will bear the expenses of treatment of all the sick people. Most people were hospitalized with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration. At present, more than a hundred people are undergoing treatment in different hospitals.
The government has formed a committee of 3 members. This committee will investigate under the direction of IAS Navjeevan Panwar. Superintendent Engineer Pradeep Nigam and Medical College Associate Professor Dr. Shailesh Rai have been included in this committee. CM Yadav also expressed grief over this incident, paid tribute to the deceased and wished for the speedy recovery of those undergoing treatment.
Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said, “As per my information, 35 people have been discharged from hospitals. Between the evening of December 29 and the evening of December 30, around 66 people are undergoing treatment. I believe that these deaths occurred due to this unfortunate incident (water contamination problem). It has been directed that all the people who were admitted to hospitals or have been discharged after treatment, should be given proper and free treatment.
